Are e-cigarettes a Better Choice Than Tobacco Cigarettes?

In recent months, there’s been a lot of speculation as to whether e-cigarettes are a healthy alternative to traditional cigarettes.

The electronics cigarettes UK market has exploded in the last four years, mainly due to the fall in price of the electronic cigarette unit. Whereas four years ago, one stick cost about £100, today you can buy a starter kit for £25. And so it’s unsurprising that so many smokers who can’t face the idea of actually quitting their nicotine habit have switched to smoking electronic cigarettes.

When you compare the two products, electronic cigarettes are certainly less harmful. They still provide the nicotine that smokers crave, but without the harmful toxins that are found in traditional cigarettes. This includes tar, carbon monoxide and other harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke.

Electronic cigarettes are a lot cleaner as well. There is no build-up of ash, no yellow staining of fingers, teeth or clothes, and crucially, no second-hand smoke for your friends and family to be exposed to while you are smoking.

Electronic cigarettes work in the following way. You inhale on the cartridge just as you would on a traditional cigarette filter. As you inhale, the nicotine is drawn into an atomizing chamber where it becomes a vapour that you can inhale just as you would take a drag on a traditional cigarette. The fact that ‘smoking’ an electronic cigarette requires similar actions and habits to smoking a tobacco cigarette probably explains a lot about their popularity with smokers.

While it’s not exactly healthy to have a nicotine addiction, it’s certainly better to continue that without all the extra harmful substances connected to tobacco smoking. Certainly it would seem that electronic cigarettes are healthier for people to smoke than traditional cigarettes, and because they emit only a vapour, not real smoke, they’re a lot more socially acceptable, too.
